Five Questions - Richard Bruce, Over the Edge, Melrose

Richard 'The Bruce', on the picturesque perfection of Melrose singletrack.

Introduce yourself please!
I am a business partner in Over the Edge Sports – Melrose, sometimes straw house builder, occasional mountain biker, soon to be father of 3, traveller, sailor, voyeur and event planner/lackey!

What’s so special about Melrose?
It is the delicate combination of fun flowing single track, married with magnificent old red gums, kangaroo’s and the odd Goanna. Add to this some country hospitality, fine wines, a tasty ale or 2 and the very relaxed atmosphere that surrounds this beautiful region and you start to get a little bit of the picture that is Melrose.

What’s this we hear about an 18hr race?
Something a new on the Australian mountain biking landscape. Over the Edge create events that compliment our region and are very much about bringing mountain bikers together to celebrate mountain biking. So in our travelling around Australia we have listened to some of their comments and added a spirited and fun event to coincide with our Fat Tyre Festival enabling folk to race, explore and celebrate in what the Flinders Ranges has to offer.

Why 18 hours? It’s unique for Australia. Our affiliation with Fruita, Colorado tells us that it is successful. So then it comes down to, how do we fit it in on a normal weekend without the extra day of a long weekend? Starting at midnight on a Friday is quite an ingenious idea as it allows people to travel to Melrose at the start of their weekend and then finishing at 6pm or “Happy Hour” on Saturday night enables people to celebrate their adventure in style before heading home or staying on to explore the Flinders Ranges and then joining us the following weekend for the Fat Tyre Festival.

What can people expect if they come along for the 18hrs of Melrose? Some surprises, some of the things they already love, some nudity or maybe not, some music, some Coopers ales, a couple of reds or maybe a port, thrown in with whole lot of laughter and plenty of grin inducing singletrack.
Finish this sentence – “The only thing better than 18hrs of Melrose is 18hrs of………” gentle but rousing, loving not just lusty, adoring but not rough, educated but not familiar, curvy but not twisted ssssssingletrack.

We are always riding and welcome the opportunity to ride and share some tips with someone new. So thanks for your support, I look forward to a ride with you soon.

Trails

16mm of rain overnight has finally settled the dust and should make for a great weekend of riding. Hugh's new berm will be bedded in a little better and we should be able to rail it at high speeds.
Love the ride

Cube Analog Rental

Nice new Cube Analog Disc hardtails have just hit the store. RRP $1099 or rental for $40 get while they're fresh!

As is with the Over the Edge way we depreciate these bikes after every days rental, you can buy them at any stage or when they have reached 40 rentals and will be replaced from the rental fleet.

Trail maintenance and Pizza night thanks

Well, while some of you were tearing up the dance floor at WOMAD a few of us were stripping the trails of debris and grass in Melrose. Thanks to those that helped, in particular to Sam and Michael for putting in a huge effort on Sunday.
The crew managed to clear out "Edge Loop" and rediscover "Out the back" which I rode this morning and is super clear and fast just now!
Hugh swept, yes that's right swept "On a Bender" and I cleared the cobwebs this morning. The things we do to make our trails fast and fun!
Sunday night was the inaugural fundraiser night at the North Star where a few dedicated Southern Flinders Rough Riders donned the chefs hat and took to the kitchen in an effort to raise funds for our trails. It was a really fun night and I think it had a special atmosphere, but that could have been the beer tasting I was doing. There was also an open mic session going and Mike even brought his beloved Blues albums down to mix it for the faithful.
All in all we raised nearly $400 which is almost enough for a whipper snipper, so thanks to the North Star Hotel for organising a great night and to Kerri for making sure the kitchen never fell apart during our 40 pizza rush! The next night will be Sunday May 29...maybe earlier if we can wangle another one!?

Bike Buller Festival

Wow what a great weekend at the recent Bike Buller Festival up at Mt Buller in Victoria. I heard some stories about the new StoneFly trail and just generally love the Alpine region and I was not to be disappointed with either!
The weather was a real bonus and so often can make an event (like the 2010 Fat Tyre Fest!). Apparently this was the first weekend all summer when it didn't rain! In fact it was perfect with 22 - 26 degree days and typical zero degree alpine nights!
Whilst the weather was great, the trails certainly were the icing on top! Fun, fast flowing trails not too technical but when you add speed, which is what these trails demand, then they become techi! There were innumerable berms, an awesome amount of switchbacks and a heap of flowing rollers and doubles to hammer! StoneFly was every thing it was cracked up to be with all of the above mentioned - multiplied!
It was a little daunting heading into StoneFly during the 50km race as I had just finished the climb to Mt Stirling, descended again and started the climb for the second time, when i bonked and Macca dropped me, so after a little picnic on the side of the trail I set off in pursuit! Arriving at the beginning of StoneFly a little shaky still, then I passed a guy walking his bike in the
opposite direction with a fair amount of Claret coming from his nose and face (1 love to StoneFly!) you could say I had a few mixed emotions! Time to concentrate was my first thought, but I was intrigued and after the AMB write up, I was loaded with expectation! I was not to be disappointed, with a fast, flowing, grin inducing descent! If it wasn't a race I would have turned around and done it again! maybe 6 or 7 times! The official at the bottom of this track must have been loving their job, with riders appearing at the end of the trail with mad grins on there faces!
I eventually caught Macca, I think he was cruising just waiting for me, which is what the weekend was all about; sure you want to push yourself, after all it is a race and you signed up for that intensity, but what's the point if you can't ride with ya mates which is so often what mountain biking is all about. You don't need an event to visit a mountain bike destination like Buller or Melrose, just grab a mate, a bike and come ride!
Hope to see you there! Come ride with us!
